Without Berry no-one reading this would be able to listen to the R 'n' R music they are (And I use RnR in it's broadest sense so will include ALL black-influenced music )

Adele can hold a tune, I'll give her that. Daydreamer and Set Fire to the Rain are stunning tunes. Mary J Bile though is utter shte.

You're My World is better than anything better than both have recorded.

The engine with blood was sweaty and damp
And brilliantly lit with a brimstone lamp
An imp for fuel was shovelling bones
While the furnace rang with a thousand groans

The boiler was filled with lager beer
The Devil himself was the engineer
The passengers were most a motley crew
Some were foreigners and others he knew
Rich men in broadcloth, beggars in rags
Handsome young ladies and wicked old hags

As the train rushed on at a terrible pace
Sulphuric fumes scorched their hands and face
Wider and wider the country grew
Faster and faster the engine flew
Louder and louder the thunder crashed
Brighter and brighter the lightning flashed

Your comment surprises me, MDE.

The last time we interacted, you asserted quite firmly that Cilla Black is a better singer than Mary J Blige and Adele.

Therefore I opened this thread expecting your contribution to be along the lines of "Pfft, Chuck Berry. Had nuffin' on George Formby..."

Very sad, but wow, what a great long life.

Without a doubt one of the most influential musicians of all time. Only an idiot wouldn't recognize the important of this man.

RIP

Well said Chim, the complete opposite of the anodyne middle class bores that now constitute "rock" music and so what if he borrowed some style from others EVERYONE DOES, he made music to get your heart racing and your feet dancing and it don't get better than that !

"He could play his guitar like a ringing a bell"
Johnny B Goode the standard by which all other rock 'n roll songs are judged.
too many other great rock 'n roll songs he duck walked across the stage to mention.
RIP

Re: Chuck Berry dead
Though rumours of him owing it all to Michael J. Fox may be exaggerated, he definitely owed a lot more than he ever gave credit, or paid royalties for, to Johnnie Johnson.

Great pioneer, but heard some rumours he ripped his whole style off some nerdy white kid back in the 50's.

"...I realised they all sounded the same..."

Ffs, songs like "Never Can Tell" are pretty much a social model kids have been following for generations and people like Wilko Johnson would probably have been buskers without him. The world is a poorer place with his passing and him a miser, forsooth!

Mallard. You know it! Though it was a slightly more involved version with a clever way of running out of it added onto the end. Of course, I didn't really take that bit in, as I was too mesmerised and excited by the first part. It was like someone had shown me the key to the world. And when I discovered that if you moved it to a different fret it still worked, I was off like a greyhound, haha.

Was that the holding down E and B string on the 5th whilst bending the G on the 7th ??

Re: Chuck Berry dead
One of the great pioneers of rock'n'roll, and so I owe him for colouring my entire life. Starting with pulling sixties Stones, Kinks, Beatles etc records out of my mum's old box of singles, when I was a little kid, and listening to glam on the radio and Top of the Pops. Punk. Then getting more deeply into sixties then fifties stuff. The Stooges and the MC5, the Dolls, etc. At every turn, people wholesale pinching from Chuck Berry.

First thing someone showed me how to play on a guitar? A Chuck Berry riff. First thing anyone ever asked me to show them? The same Chuck Berry riff, about a week later.
